The American Physicians Art Association was founded in 1936 as a national, non-profit organization whose purpose is:
To further the art interests of the medical profession
To broaden the physician artists knowledge and appreciation of the past and present through visual arts
To stimulate physician artists to produce works of art in the fields of painting, sculpture, photography, graphic arts, design and creative crafts
To hold an Annual National Art Exhibition (currently with the Southern Medical Association) of physicians' art works
To encourage and assist the establishment of local, regional physician art organizations and exhibits
To enable physician artists to meet each other, exchange ideas, and encourage one another in artistic expression
To have educational programs, art workshops, and other activities to further artistic growth
Membership is open to graduates with either an MD or DO degree, with a special membership category for students, interns, and residents
